The Supreme Court is hearing two cases related to President Biden’s student loan forgiveness plan, which could prevent millions of Americans from having thousands of dollars in debt eliminated. The Biden administration argues that canceling the debt will prevent borrowers from being worse off financially when federal student loan payments resume after the COVID-19 pandemic. The court will decide whether the COVID-19 emergency is an appropriate rationale for widespread relief. In the meantime, borrowers should make payments on their debt while interest is not being levied and contact their student loan servicer if they’re struggling to make payments. Federal loans qualify for forgiveness, and targeted relief programs like Public Service Loan Forgiveness and Borrower Defense to Repayment are still in place regardless of the Supreme Court’s ruling. |
